Valorlis reports increase in selective collection of packaging
Valorlis, the company responsible for the treatment and recovery of urban waste in the municipalities of Batalha, Leiria, Marinha Grande, Ourém, Pombal and Porto de Mós, saw a 6% increase in the selective collection of plastic, metal, cardboard and glass packaging compared to 2023.
Selective collection of recyclables enabled 18,310 tonnes of waste to be sent for recycling. Of this amount, 7,208 tonnes correspond to paper/cardboard, which increased by 8% compared to 2023, 4,886 tonnes relate to plastic/metal/ECAL packaging, which increased by 9% compared to the previous year, and 6,215 tonnes of glass, a figure that remained more stable, with a slight increase of 2%. ECAL packaging, which increased by 9% compared to the previous year, and 6,215 tonnes of glass, a figure that remained more stable, with a slight increase of 2%.
To encourage increased glass recycling, VALORLIS launched two pilot projects aimed at glass recycling in the restaurant and hotel industry, the Marinha+Vidro project and the Com o Vidro no Coração project, in which new technological solutions for the collection of recyclable glass packaging are being tested.
In the case of packaging waste, other materials received at recycling centres, such as electrical and electronic equipment, scrap metal and wood, are also sent for recycling. In 2024, this amounted to a total of 946 tonnes, an increase of 37% over the previous year.
Marta Loia Guerreiro, Executive Director of Valorlis, says that “once again this year, we have seen that the residents of our area continue to be committed to the cause of recycling. This is a commitment that we must all reinforce and strengthen for the sake of a better environment and a more sustainable future. SEPARATE and VALORLIS will do the rest!”
Valuing the joint effort of the population and municipalities, as well as the involvement of its employees, in favour of the environment and increased recycling, Valorlis provides a network of 1,896 recycling points distributed across the six municipalities in its area of operation, a service that is complemented by door-to-door collection from businesses and services, as well as programmes to encourage sorting and recycling in schools and institutions.
